Neurology Tests

If you have neurological symptoms like headaches, sleep problems, or memory loss, there are several tests and procedures our doctor may do to find out if you have a brain disorder or another medical condition. While some brain disorders can be hard to diagnose, research has advanced our ability to detect—and treat—many neurological disorders and related conditions. This  information  below is about common tests and procedures  our doctor may use to diagnose neurological disorders.

EMG

Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic test that evaluates the health and function of your skeletal muscles and the nerves that control them. It’s one form of electrodiagnostic testing.Every body movement you make, from lifting your leg to nodding your head, involves complex communication between your central nervous system (your brain and spinal cord), nerves and muscles. To produce movement, your motor (movement) nerves send electrical signals to your muscles. An EMG can detect issues with your motor nerves, muscles or the communication between the two. Before you have an EMG, you should:

  • Bathe or shower and wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.

  • Avoid putting cream, lotion or perfume on your skin. Creams and lotions can affect the test’s accuracy.

VNG

T
Videonystagmography (VNG) is a test that measures a type of eye movement that you can't control. These eye movements are called nystagmus. With nystagmus, your eyes move from side to side, up and down, or in a circle. The movements can be slow or fast, steady or jerky. If you're having symptoms of a balance problem, VNG can help find out if a vestibular disorder is causing your symptoms.
VNG is used to find out if you have a disorder of the vestibular system (the balance system in your inner ear). It can also help find problems with the nerves or parts of your brain that are part of your sense of balance. aVNG if you have symptoms of a vestibular disorder. The main symptom is dizziness. Dizziness means different things to different people.

It can include:

  • Vertigo, a feeling that you or everything around you is spinning

  • feeling as if you're going to fall

  • Feeling lightheaded or as if you are going to faint

  • Other symptoms of a vestibular disorder may include: Ringing in your ears (tinnitus)

  • Feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear

EEG

An EEG, or electroencephalogram, is a test that measures and records the electrical activity of the brain. It's a non-invasive procedure where electrodes are attached to the scalp to detect the brain's electrical signals, which are then displayed as wave patterns on a screen or paper. Preparing for an EEG involves ensuring clean and dry hair, potentially avoiding caffeine and certain medications,s.

What are EEGs used for?

EEGs are used to diagnose and monitor a variety of neurological conditions, including:

  • Seizures and epilepsy: EEGs can help identify abnormal brain wave patterns associated with seizures.

  • Brain diseases: EEGs can help diagnose conditions like encephalitis (brain infection) and rapidly progressing dementia.

C- Doppler

C- Doppler ultrasound is a noninvasive test that can be used to measure the blood flow through your blood vessels. It works by bouncing high-frequency sound waves off red blood cells that are circulating in the bloodstream. A regular ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images, but can't show blood flow.C-Doppler ultrasound may help diagnose many conditions, including:

  • Blood clots.

  • Heart valve defects and congenital heart disease

  • .A blocked artery, called arterial occlusion.

  • Decreased blood circulation into your legs, called peripheral artery disease.

  • Bulging arteries, known as aneurysms.

  • Narrowing of an artery in the neck, called carotid artery stenosis.

A Doppler ultrasound can estimate how fast blood flows by measuring the rate of change in its pitch, also called frequency.
